Why there are so many spellings
The name comes from Tamil and is written many ways in English. Panneer is the spelling we use. People also search for Paneer grapes, Panner grapes, Pannir grapes, Panneer Thratchai or simply black grapes from Theni. They all lead to the same fruit.
What the grape is like
Panneer grapes are dark purple to black, with a thin skin and a sweet, slightly musky taste. Most of them are grown in Theni district and Cumbum valley, and they can fruit up to three times a year. The registered Geographical Indication name is Cumbum Panneer Thratchai.
From fresh grapes to dry grapes
Fresh Panneer grapes are picked and dried in a solar dryer. When no chemicals are used, the seeds stay soft and edible. These are the seeded dry grapes, sometimes called black raisins or kishmish. Ours are dried with no added sulphur.
Fresh grapes and farm visits
